Notes: 船 (boat) is read as ふね by itself. 長 is the first character of 長い 【ながい】 (long), but as a suffix, 長 means leader or head, as in the words 村長【そんちょう】 (village chief), 町長【ちょうちょう】 (mayor), 校長 【こうちょう】 (principal). There are exceptions; 最長【さいちょう】 is “longest” or “oldest”, not “Ultimate Boss”.
